Why Hongkongers Should Drop a Few Kilos Before the Festive Season Hits
Christmas in Hong Kong is non-stop eating: office parties at IFC, hotel buffets in Tsim Sha Tsui, Christmas Day yum cha, turkey dinners, log cakes, endless tins of butter cookies, and mulled wine at the Peak. By Lunar New Year most of us are 4-6 kg heavier and squeezing into our cheongsams or slim-cut suits.
Here’s why losing a quick 2-3 kg in the next four weeks is the smartest move you’ll make all year.
1. You’ll enjoy the festive season instead of counting calories
Drop 2–3 kg now and you can attack the roast goose, abalone rice, and champagne brunches guilt-free. That small buffer turns December into celebration, not damage control.
2. Your clothes will still fit for New Year countdown and LNY
Nothing worse than your favourite Uniqlo heat-tech or tailored blazer feeling tight at the Victoria Harbour fireworks or family reunion dinner. Two kilos lighter keeps everything comfortable.
3. You’ll feel better in Hong Kong’s "winter"
Even when it drops to 15–18 °C, less body fat means you won’t overheat on the MTR or hiking the Peak on Christmas morning.
4. Beat the post-holiday rush
Every gym in Central and Kowloon will be packed from 2 January with people trying to lose the exact weight you’ll already have under control.
5. The mental win is priceless
While everyone else is loosening their belt from now until February, you’ll walk into 2026 lighter, energised, and quietly smug.
How hard is it?
25 November to Christmas Eve = 4 weeks. To lose 2-3 kg you only need 500-750 g per week:
- Take the stairs instead of the escalator in Central
- Swap one afternoon milk tea or Starbucks for black coffee or water
- Walk the Mid-Levels escalator in the evening (great views + steps)
- Fill half your dinner plate with veg before hitting the rice or noodles
- Sleep earlier - Hong Kong runs on too little sleep
- If you're keen, replace two meals a day with a healthy, filling Herbalife meal replacement shake.
Do it now and you’ll eat, drink, shop, and celebrate all the way through Christmas and Lunar New Year – without starting 2026 on the back foot.
